The 3 Minute Step Test, also known as the Queens College Step Test, is an accessible method for assessing aerobic fitness that can be undertaken by individuals of various fitness levels.
This sub-maximal test is designed to evaluate cardiovascular endurance with minimal administration requirements, allowing participants to focus on their performance while the accompanying app facilitates the process.
Procedure of the 3 Minute Step Test
- The participant steps up and down on a platform at a rate of 22 steps per minute for females and 24 steps per minute for males. The app features an internal metronome to maintain the required pace, using a four-step cadence: 'up-up-down-down' for a duration of 3 minutes.
- Immediately upon completion of the test, participants halt and follow guided instructions to count their heart rate over a period of 15 seconds.
- Finally, users input their recorded heart rate into the app, which calculates their level of aerobic fitness and estimates VO2max. The underlying principle is that a lower heart rate following intense activity correlates with a higher aerobic fitness capacity.
